Independent, and we show our working

Your dog's food, graded out of 100.

We read the label on 122 dog foods, checked every figure against the maker's own page, and gave each one a score you can pull apart line by line. A tin, a kibble and a frozen patty are put on the same footing, so the comparison is honest. And when a company doesn't publish enough for us to judge a food fairly, we say so rather than guess.

The moisture problem, in one picture

Every strip below is on the same scale: 0–100% of the food as sold. The teal band is water. It is why a canned food's 8% protein and a kibble's 32% are far closer than they look, and why price per pound tells you almost nothing.

The database, live

The eight highest-protein foods on a dry-matter basis, straight out of the index. Every bar is drawn against the range of all 122 foods, so a bar here means exactly what the same bar means anywhere else on the site.

Dry-matter values computed from each label's guaranteed analysis. Bars span the full database range; the tick marks the median. Scroll horizontally to see all 7 columns.

Why this site exists

Dog food information online is opinion stacked on opinion: star ratings whose methodology is invisible and moves without notice, listicles quoting prices from three years ago, comparisons that never mention a brand changed hands or reformulated. We score food too — but the rubric is published in full, fixed, and shown broken into its parts on every page, so you can see which judgement produced which number and throw out the ones you disagree with.

Meanwhile the facts are printed on every label by law: a guaranteed analysis, a calorie content statement, an AAFCO adequacy statement. BowlGrade collects those facts, normalises them so different formats can actually be compared, and links every number to where it came from.

The gaps are data too. 9 of the 122 foods here publish no guaranteed analysis at all on their public pages, and 55 individual label values are missing across the database. We draw the hole and name the manufacturer rather than filling it with a number borrowed from somewhere else.

Three things we compute that labels don't show

Dry-matter basis

Moisture runs from 5% to 82% across this database, so as-fed percentages cannot be compared across formats. Every food is converted.

DM% = as-fed ÷ (100 − moisture) × 100

Cost per 1,000 kcal

You are buying calories, not pounds. Calorie density here spans 922–5,400 kcal/kg — nearly six-fold — which is the whole reason per-pound prices mislead.

$ per 1,000 kcal = price ÷ (kg × kcal/kg) × 1,000

AAFCO evidence level

"Formulated to meet" and "animal feeding tests substantiate" are different legal standards. 18 of the 122 foods here carry the feeding-trial statement. We quote every statement verbatim and never score it.

g per 1,000 kcal = as-fed% × 10,000 ÷ kcal/kg
