How these comparisons are made

Nothing here is scored. Each comparison sets two brands side by side on the same rows — format, what the manufacturer publishes, calorie density, estimated cost per 1,000 kcal, AAFCO evidence level, recall record, ownership — and states plainly when one side publishes nothing. Nutrition figures come from the same sourced label database that powers the rest of the site; recall statements are checked against the recall tracker.

Price is where most comparisons quietly go wrong, so it is handled explicitly: dollar figures are 2026 third-party pricing tests or brand-published rates, they are labelled as estimates, and they are converted to a per-calorie basis with the cost tool. The fresh recipes in this database average 74% moisture against 11% for the dry ones, so a box price and a bag price are not measuring the same thing until the water comes out of both.

Some outbound links pay us, and each one is labelled as a sponsored link at the point it appears. They do not change a row, a number or a verdict: the data is collected the same way either way, and the rows are the same rows whichever brand is on which side. Full methodology · how we make money.
